As we all know security tools can cost a fortune and to be honest most of us do not have the space for them in our budget.
So before you consider or even go ahead with the purchase of a security solution why not try some of the free tools available out on the net?
I’ll be presenting a couple of applications that you could use instead or as option to the ones that costs.
br>
Snort an intrusion detection software that has become quite famous today.
It can recognize most attacks to a server and can be configured along with iptables to cancel and shut down the connection to the source of the attack.
A nice tool I have to say. br>
OpenVPN is a nice tool that has no problem to get through firewalls and NAT as it works on SSL.
This tool has both clients for Windows and Mac as well and is a good alternative for IPSec and PPTP.
SpamAssasin as you might have figured out from the name it’s a spam filter that you install on your email server.
Have to admit that this one is very effective and lives up to its name.
SpamAssasin have technologies like optical recognition, Bayesian-filters and RBLs.
Another thing worth mentioning is that it also works with Microsoft Exchange, so if you have an email server then I recommend you to give this tool a go. br>
L7Filter is a module for iptables that enables you to block those otherwise tricky applications like MSN Messenger and bittorent clients that don’t operate on a predetermined port.
With this one it all becomes so much easier!
ClamAv is a free antivirus program that can either be installed as an application on your server that controls incoming and outgoing emails for viruses or as an application on your workstation, in other words a regular antivirus program as we know it.
The ClamAv community is great which produces updates and new virus definitions very quickly and very often you get new virus definitions before the commercial ones manage to release theirs.
ClamAV has a windows client as well.

Ow man I like this list thanks!
