Microsoft just got another “enemy” on the battlefield.
Yeah well not really, just a new competitor who will try to get some of Microsoft’s users, just another day on the market.
Symphony, the same name as their product way back some years ago but not the same program obviously, is launched today, and will contain applications for text processing, presentation and calculation. In other words what today MS Office users get from Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
The only difference is that this package from IBM will be free compared to Microsoft’s solution.
Symphony is bases on OpenOffice.org’s software which is open source, that naturally uses the Opendocument format when saving but as well supports the MS office format.
Which means Symphony will be working with those formats as well.
Symphony is available for download on IBM’s homepage.
