Russia plans to install their own Linux distribution “Russia OS” in every school in the country, The program starts next year in three regions and during 2009 the Linux operation is put into high gear, reports CNews

The goal is basically that Russia OS will be installed on each school computer throughout Russia and in this way lower the country’s dependency on foreign software (Should be read as American).
- During 2008 Russian software will be tested in three regions: Tomsk, Perm and Republic of Tatarstan, says Leonid Reiman, Minister of Communications in Russia.
- During 2009 the national software will be installed on each school computer, he continues.
The experts are already optimistic and say that Russia will succeed with their new strategy.
- Linux based software that is tested during 2007-2008 can actually be ready to be installed in the schools at the end of 2009, said Sergey Shalmanov (analyst).
- After that the current software model that is used now in the school will be scraped and fail. It has already lost an amount of its benefits due to the big pirate distribution of windows. To install Windows on the computers is not beneficial, neither from a economic perspective because of its costs or a strategic point as it ties the youth to a product and company - even if it’s a popular and user friendly platform.
